History and Growth
In 2002, the concept for an "innovation centre" that would help grow existing companies was first scribbled on a paper napkin in a Markham coffee shop by Bob Glandfield and Peter Ott. The concept was simple, become a "one-stop" centre, operating on a non-profit basis, where senior managers of established businesses could gain access to the expertise (mentors), programs and resources that will help advance their enterprises to the next level.
By the beginning of 2003, the paper napkin concept was now a formal business plan that was financially supported by the following founding members - the Town of Markham, the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program, and York University; with the Royal Bank contributing as a founding sponsor. Shortly therafter, the founding supporters were joined by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development. In March of that year, Bob Glandfield received the keys to Suite 100 at the Lucent-Avaya Building on Rodick Road in Markham. When the Innovation Synergy Centre in Markham was launched in December 2003, there was a staff of four and Suite 100 had been transformed from a telecommunications research facility into a functioning business hub.
By mid 2009, ISCM has had the opportunity to offer mentoring assistance to over 1,400 companies. In addition, the ISCM, often in partnership with others, has organized many workshops, seminars and training courses that have been attended by thousands of individuals.
An Efficient Business Operation
As with any successful business, the ISCM manages its operations in a very efficient manner. The centre operates with a small core staff who manage administration, events and programs. We retain a large, flexible pool of senior business mentors, who work with ISCM clients on an as required basis. The centre further leverages its operations by utlizing online applications to manage important tasks such as client relationship management, data tracking and event registration. At the strategic level, the centre receives direction and advice from a seasoned Board of Directors. In addition, the ISCM continues to build strategic and functional networks with other organizations to provide quick access to expertise and business assistance programs.
